Auspicious Spring Cleaning Dates for 2014

2014 Dates for Spring Cleaning

It is a chinese tradition to close a year and start off with fresh new energy with a big scale spring cleaning (sweeping). It is a day to either preserve the good luck, get rid of the bad luck and invite new luck for the new year. If a big scale cleaning is not conducted, everyone living in that particular household will feel lethargic and emotionally cluttered in the new year. Normally, one could follow some rules depending on individual's situation:

Situation 1: If one had enjoyed good harvest, happy moments and generally a fruitful year, they should start to sweep from the maindoor inward into the house. This is to retain positive energy.

Situation 2: If one had suffered from a bad year, sad moments and losses, they should start to sweep from an inner corner of the house diagonal to the maindoor and sweep outwards towards the maindoor.

Situation 3: If one wants to start everything over again from square one (irrespective of good or bad year experienced), they can start sweeping from inner part
of the house to the maindoor and sweep outwards towards the maindoor. In this case, they should choose a BREAK DAY in particular and the most suitable to do this is on 24 January 2014 (conflict Ox).

LUCKY MONEY - 压岁钱

LUCKY MONEY - 压岁钱 - Golden Ya Sui Qian (A Blessing to Your Children & Elders)

Lucky Money (压岁钱, Ya Sui Qian) is an essential ingredient in China's Spring Festival. Lucky Money has a long history. Its origination can be traced back to the Han Dynasty. It was originally called Ya Sheng Qian. Ya Sheng Qian was not the coin in circulation. It was just shaped as coins. People at that time wore it and took it as a lucky talisman.

In the Tang Dynasty, it was a convention prevailing at imperial court to give out money as a gift for one’s relatives, friends in Spring Festival. Later in Song and Yuan Dynasty, the convention became popular among the civilians and some changes took place. People began to give money as a gift to children. Therefore precisely speaking, Lucky Money came into being in the Song or Yuan Dynasty.

Then why was it renamed Ya Sui Qian ? It was because the character “岁”, which means “year”, pronounces the same with the character “祟”, which means “evil spirit”. The ancient Chinese believed children were generally weaker than adults and as a result easier to get hurt by the evil spirits. Ya Sui Qian symbolized an amulet that could hold down the evil spirits. People gave Lucky Money to children in Spring Festival, the beginning of a Chinese New Year, hoping that the kids could pass the year and grew up safely.

The Spring Ox

The spring ox diagram appears on the first page of the chinese almanac every year.

It foretells the weather for the upcoming year, which is a very important aspect in a farmer's life in the ancient days.
The diagram above show the spring ox and the god of spring. Both of them will appear in different and unique characteristics in different years.

These characteristics (color, size, posture, outfit etc) will determine everything spelt for the year ahead.

Year 2010 - Year of the Golden Tiger

1. The year of golden tiger is a yin year because the tail of the ox bends to the right. Also the mouth of the ox shuts and the God of Spring stands on the right of the ox.

2. The God of Spring is an old man because it is the year of Tiger. In other years, he could appear as a child or a young man.

3. The God of Spring wears pants and shoes connotes the Na Yin Element of the day of the Beginning of Spring is a water day.

4. The God of Spring stands in front of the Ox implicates that the Lunar New Year is more than 5 days ahead of the Lap Chun.
